What Is a Peptide Certificate of Analysis?

A Certificate of Analysis is the single most useful document a research peptide supplier can give you — and the easiest one to fake if you do not know what to look for. This guide explains each field, how to verify a certificate against the vial in your hand, and what a COA does not tell you.

What a COA is — and what it is not

A Certificate of Analysis reports the results a laboratory obtained when it analyzed a sample drawn from one specific lot of material, using specific methods, on a specific date. That scope is narrow on purpose. The document is evidence about composition, not a warranty, not a safety determination, and not an approval.

Read that way, a COA answers three practical questions: is this the molecule it claims to be, how much of the sample is that molecule, and can I connect this document to the vial I received.

Field-by-field: how to read a peptide COA

Product name and strength
The compound the certificate describes and the labeled amount per vial. This must match the vial you are holding.
Lot / batch number
The identifier that ties this document to one specific production run. Without a matching lot number, the results describe different material.
Issuing laboratory
The organization that performed the analysis. An independent laboratory named on the document can be evaluated by you directly.
Date received and date issued
When the sample reached the laboratory and when the report was released. Large gaps or missing dates weaken traceability.
Method(s) used
For example RP-HPLC for purity or MALDI-MS for identity. Results are only interpretable alongside the method that produced them.
Purity result
Percentage of total detected peak area attributable to the target compound under that method's conditions.
Identity / molecular weight
Observed mass compared against the theoretical mass of the intended sequence.
Content or quantitation
Where reported, the measured amount of peptide present, which can differ from the labeled fill weight.
Chromatogram or spectra
The raw traces behind the summary numbers. Their presence lets a reviewer sanity-check the reported peak.

How to verify a certificate against your vial

  1. Read the lot number printed on the vial label.
  2. Confirm that exact lot number appears on the certificate — not a similar one, the same one.
  3. Confirm the compound name and labeled strength match.
  4. Confirm the certificate names an issuing laboratory and states its methods.
  5. Check that the reported purity figure corresponds to a chromatogram, not just a typed number.
  6. If anything does not line up, ask the supplier for the lot-specific document before proceeding.

Red flags in a research peptide COA

  • No lot number, or a lot number that does not appear on the product.
  • No issuing laboratory named anywhere on the document.
  • No methods stated — a purity percentage with no method behind it is unfalsifiable.
  • No dates, or a certificate reused across visibly different products.
  • Summary figures only, with chromatograms and spectra withheld.
  • Claims on the certificate that go beyond analysis, such as therapeutic or safety language.

Limits of any certificate

A COA describes one sample at one point in time. It cannot account for how the material was shipped, stored, or handled after testing, and it does not certify fitness for any particular purpose. How do I know a peptide COA is real?

Check that the document names the issuing laboratory, states the analytical methods, carries a lot number that matches your vial, includes dates, and shows the underlying chromatogram or spectra rather than only a summary figure. A generic PDF with no laboratory, no lot, and no method is not verifiable.

Should the lot number on the COA match my vial?

Yes. Lot matching is the entire point of the document. A certificate for a different lot tells you about material you did not receive.

Does a COA mean a peptide is safe or approved?

No. A Certificate of Analysis reports analytical measurements only. It is not a safety assessment, not a sterility or endotoxin clearance unless those specific tests appear on it, and not a regulatory approval of any kind.

Why do purity numbers differ between laboratories?

Chromatographic purity is method-dependent. Column chemistry, gradient, detection wavelength, and sample preparation all affect which components are resolved and detected, so two competent laboratories can report slightly different values for the same material.
